Cliff Thompson here, Appropriate Technology (AT) Evangelist for & for 501(C)(3) NGO "Paths Of Native Africa" (PoNA) & AT SIG "VillageTech".
PoNA/VillageTech is involved with helping developing nation villages with Appropriate Technology (AT) projects & has a number of ongoing projects in the sub-Saharan African countries Mali & Nigeria. Currently we are involved with setting up a water well with eventual solar water pumping for the Dogon Tribe in the village of Tereli, along the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali, as well as refurbishing a village primary & secondary school at the village Ikot Usen in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, focusing on setting up a computer lab – we recently shipped several desktop Windows PCs there, with additional laptops to come, including several "One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) 'XO laptops'" which we got through OLPC's recent "Give One Get One" program.
PoNA President Horgan Edet is a Nigerian Trader born in the village "Ikot Usen", Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, his dad a Tribal Chief/Village Elder. Horgan received early education from the Peace Corps at his village, & now, together with his business partner, PoNA VP Judah Dwyer, runs the African Imports store "African Outlet" on Octavia St. at Hayes St. San Francisco, California. Horgan & Judah founded PoNA as a 501 3C Non-Profit to help villages with Appropriate Technology projects. PoNA meets monthly at the African Outlet &, to raise funds to pay for the projects gear, held a benefit fundraiser called "Sol Power" in San Francisco on 03/01/08, as described on the website for Paths of Native Africa. At the Sol Power event I had a booth showcasing our current & upcoming particular Solar Power & general AT projects.
For the village's school computer lab, I'm designing a Solar Power PV Off-Grid system, thanks to what I learned last year in November by taking Solar Living Institute's Workshops "PV 190: Intro to Off-Grid Systems" & "PV 290: Off-Grid Systems for Professionals", to power the gear, as shown in some exported-to-.jpg PowerPoint slides I've worked up for the project & posted to my "under construction" Microsoft Office Live website "VillageTech.org". I'm hoping to expand the project by adding a Satellite Internet capability later this year.

PoNA has posted some photos of the village school on their PoNA Project page. I recently posted some photos of our various project efforts on our site for PoNA Google Picasa Web Albums. I've also posted some videos of Horgan & Judahs' recent visit to "Ikot Usen" where they meet with village elders & government officials to track & further galvanize support for PoNA's several projects in the village. The videos are on our site for PoNA Google YouTube videos. I'm also developing some Powerpoint presentations on our site for PoNA Presentations PoNA/FoAO Projects Powerpoints.
Note: I actually got started with Solar Living Institute by attending their annual Appropriate Technology Expo "SolFest" 2003 & 2004, for which I wrote a SolFest Report.
